Maple has a interesting characteristic where when water is trapped inside the tree it creates a darker stain in the wood. In Vermont when we tap maples this streaking naturally runs from each tap hole. In ambrosia maple the process is the same except tiny holes created by the ambrosia beetle creates a fine dark streaking in the wood.
